How much of an Native American Indian do you have to be in order to get money?

Chippewa
Marlena G asked:

My Dad is a quarter Chippewa. He gets money every two weeks for this. I am only an eighth of Chippewa. Do I qualify? Where would I go to apply for this money?

I’m an eighth Cherokee and I don’t qualify, so I doubt you will. But, you never know.

I’m not sure where you go but you DEFINITELY qualify

    I’m 1/8 as well…I’m Taino

EDIT HAHAH I just looked it up…You have to be 1/16 or more to qualify…and yes I know Tainos do not get any money. It is only given to the USA tribes as far as I know…and you have to register

Yes you do ,and I guess you can go to the facility itself and ask ,make sure you have the paper work you need or ask your Father.

Well, if you look anything like your avatar, then no. I’d leave the government assistance for the ghetto blacks. They might attack you if you don’t.

You have to be enrolled in the tribal scrolls I believe.

If your father is receiving money, then he should know where it comes from. Ask him what process you have to go through to be enrolled to qualify for these funds.

Native Americans and Indians are two different groups of people.

MJ is right on: Talk to your dad. Ask him where the check comes from. If it comes from his tribe of enrollment, you’d probably have to be enrolled yourself to qualify. If it is from land/mineral/other royalties you would not qualify unless you were the ’shareholder.’ In this case, your dad would have to pass away or otherwise pass on his ’shareholder rights’ for you to start receiving those types of checks.

Also, to clarify, not every Native person gets a check, even those of us who are enrolled. Some tribes distribute per capita checks to their enrolled members. If you’re enrolled in a tribe that doesn’t distribute per capita checks (for whatever reason) you don’t get a check. Some Native people have land/mineral rights that are held in trust for them. They will get a check. If you don’t have the rights in your name, you don’t get a check. And so on…

Depends on the Nation. I’m 1/8 Cherokee but was told I could get college money from the Coushattas (its been quite a few years). I felt that since I hadn’t lived as a Native it would be shameful.
Call the Chippewa tribal council office.

go to your tribal offices and ask all tribes are different, qualifications
vary from tribe to tribe. if your dad is getting money he is registered with the tribe. why didn’t he try to register you when you were born?

why are you assuming we all get something? we don’t!

and its your father. if he really IS getting money every two weeks ( something i doubt) then ask him.

    sounds way fishy.
