What is appropriate office wear for New York in the Winter?

To boot New York
chynglish asked:

I will be interning at a firm in NY this January. I am trying to get an idea of what kind of office wear is appropriate GIVEN that there will be a lot of snow, rain, chilly weather, etc.

I’m not sure that clunky rain boots will be appropriate to wear to work, and I don’t want to deal with lugging them around with me if I have to change shoes. I know that New York is primarily a city suited for walking/public transportation.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

definately invest in a trenchcoat or something similiar although you will generally get away with a good pair of leather business shoes

V-neck sweaters with dress shirts, woolen skirts/trousers, etc. Personally, I live in an area where there’s lots of snow and most people (both men & women) at the firms I’ve worked at tend to wear winter boots or running shoes to work and keep a pair of dressy shoes at the office. It’s the best strategy for not ruining your nice shoes..you wouldn’t be lugging anything around, you’d just keep a pair or two of your dressy shoes at the office for the duration of your internship.

Alternatively, if you’re female, you could go with stilleto boots, (pointy toed)..they work well with both trousers and skirts…men have it a little harder since nice italian leather doesn’t seem to like snow, hail, road salt, rain, etc.

    Hope this helps!
