As long as you adjust the binding, will any ski boot work in any binding for downhill?

I’m new to skiing and I hate to ask a dumb question, but I have to ask. I’m interested in buying skis and need to know this.

All alpine ski boots must meet an industry standard to work with the bindings. Really old boots may not work with step-in bindings, but everything made in the last 30 years or so should conform to the standard.

The notable exception is Alpine Touring and Telemark ski boots used primarily for downhill use. These meet their own standards and are not held to industry standards for releasable step-in bindings.
